Our History

What began as a two-day affair in 1923 has grown to be a beloved tradition for the city of Caruthers and the people who call it home. Family entertainment, exhilarating carnival rides, the sweet scent of delectable food -- the Caruthers District Fair has been a source of incredible memories for more than 90 years.

The Fair was originally created to promote Caruthers’ rich agriculture industry, a focus of the Caruthers District Fair Association that was formed in 1925. The Fair enjoyed a few rich years before being discontinued during World War II, when the fairgrounds were used as an emergency labor camp. Following the end of the war, a group of men called the Young Farmers reestablished the event. The 1946 event was deemed a huge success and in the years since, it’s become a favorite tradition both for visitors and those who call Caruthers home.

These days, the Caruthers District Fair looks a bit different, but much remains the same. Still held on the original 17-acre property, the Caruthers District Fair is the largest free-gate fair in California. It’s a community-driven event with each facet -- agriculture, livestock, food, rides -- organized by committed volunteers.

The Fair is an important part of the fabric of Caruthers, representing something that generations can share with each other in this small community. Many Caruthers High alumni schedule their class reunions around the Fair and it’s a popular weekend for folks to “come back home” and connect with their friends and family. And, of course, it’s a great way for people in the Central Valley to experience a slice of Caruthers.

There’s something for everyone at the hometown tradition known as the Caruthers Fair. Enjoy a home-cooked meal from one of the food booths, provided by local nonprofit organizations, or buy a raffle ticket from one of the Caruthers Fair Queen candidates for a chance at winning a brand-new car. Experience the pomp and circumstance of the annual parade and be sure to spot the Fair’s Grand Marshall riding in an original 1910 Model T Ford! Whether you’re interested in entertainment, livestock, carnival rides, or just connecting with old friends, there’s nothing quite like the Caruthers District Fair.
